Enrico Letta, Catalonia : Dialog not incompatible with Spain unity

Send by e-mail

« I deeply regret the situation that occurred in Catalonia and I follow the last developments very carefully. I am convinced that the respect for the rule of law and the political dialogue will prevail ». That’s what the President of the Jacques Delors Institute and former Italian Prime Minister, Enrico Letta, said on the Catalan question in many international media. « The Catalan question cannot be only discussed in legal terms but it has to find a political solution – he added: « The path of dialogue is not incompatible with the necessary respect of the rule of law and so the constitutional unity of the Spanish State ».
The former Italian government leader, worrying about the consequences that the Spanish crisis can have on the rest of Europe, mentioned a risk of contagion in other Member States that experience regional independent movements: « Europe must avoid this chaos because it can disperse quickly in the rest of Europe. We wish that a solution will be find as soon as possible, in order to avoid that such a complicated situation leads to social or competitiveness problems that Europe wants to avoid above all ».
